Step-by-step guide to connect ChatGPT to Dataslayer MCP. Learn how to set up OpenAI's ChatGPT Plus or Pro to query your marketing data using natural language.
Requirements
Before you start, make sure you have:
- ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription — MCP features are not available on the free ChatGPT tier
- ChatGPT Developer mode enabled
- Active Dataslayer account with at least one connected data source
- Web access — MCP is currently only available on ChatGPT web interface (ChatGPT.com), not on mobile apps
MCP support in ChatGPT is currently in beta and only available in Developer mode for Pro and Plus accounts on the web.

Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Enable Developer Mode
- Log in to ChatGPT.com on your web browser
- Click on your profile icon in the bottom left corner
- Select Settings
- Navigate to Apps & Connectors > Advanced settings
- Toggle Developer mode to enabled
2. Add Dataslayer MCP Server
While still in Apps & Connectors, click on Create. You'll need to enter the Dataslayer MCP server details:
- Server Name: Enter "Dataslayer" (or any name you prefer)
- Server URL: You'll find this in your Dataslayer account under AI → Dataslayer MCP → Connect with ChatGPT
- Authentication: Select No athentication since the URL is already unique per user
- Select the box I trust this application
- Click Create
3. Confirm Connection
Once authenticated:
- ChatGPT will confirm the connection is active
- You should see "Dataslayer" listed in your connected servers
- The status should show as "Active" or "Enabled"
4. Test Your Connection
Start a new chat in ChatGPT and try a simple query.
If everything is set up correctly, ChatGPT will fetch your data and display the results.
Understanding Beta Behavior
Since MCP in ChatGPT is currently a beta feature, there are some important things to know:
Expected messages you might see:
After connecting successfully, ChatGPT may display a message saying the connector "can't be used for search". This is normal behavior. Dataslayer MCP provides data retrieval actions, not search actions, so this message doesn't indicate a problem with your connection.
Beta features can change:
Because this functionality is still being developed, OpenAI may update how MCP works without prior notice. If something stops working or behaves differently, check back here or consult the official ChatGPT Developer Mode documentation for the latest information.
Best Practices for Beta Usage
To get the most reliable results while MCP is in beta, use clear and detailed prompts:
Be specific about what you want:
- Explicitly mention you want to use the Dataslayer MCP connector
- Specify which metrics and dimensions you need
- Include date ranges and sorting preferences
- Mention the data source if you have multiple connected
Example of a well-structured prompt:
"Using the Dataslayer MCP connector, retrieve my Google Ads data
for the account "X" for the last 30 days. Show me spend, impressions,
and clicks grouped by campaign name, sorted by spend from highest to lowest."
Instead of a vague prompt:
"Show me my Google Ads data"
The more explicit you are, the better ChatGPT can understand exactly which data to retrieve and how to format it.
Important Limitations
Since MCP support is currently in beta:
- Web only: MCP connections only work on ChatGPT.com, not on mobile apps or desktop apps
- Developer mode required: You must keep Developer mode enabled to use MCP features
- Beta stability: As a beta feature, you may occasionally encounter bugs or connection issues
- Changes possible: OpenAI can modify how MCP works as they continue development
What Happens Next?
Once connected, ChatGPT can:
- Query any data source connected to your Dataslayer account
- Answer questions about campaign performance, metrics, and trends
- Generate reports and summaries based on your actual data
- Provide follow-up analysis when you ask additional questions
You don't need to reconnect each time. The integration remains active as long as both your ChatGPT subscription and Dataslayer account are current.
Managing Your Connection
To disconnect ChatGPT:
- Go to ChatGPT Settings → Apps & Connectors
- Find Dataslayer in your connected servers
- Click Disconnect or Remove
To reconnect: Follow the same setup process again.
Authentication and Security
ChatGPT connects to Dataslayer through a secure, encrypted connection. Your data credentials are never shared with OpenAI directly.
