How to change the query cell range in your spreadsheet

Do you need to adjust your query's cell range? Follow this step-by-step guide to ensure your data appears exactly where you want it.

When working with queries in spreadsheets, it's common to realize after setting them up that the selected cell range isn't quite right. Fortunately, adjusting the range is a straightforward process. Follow these steps to modify the query’s placement efficiently!

1. Locate the query in your spreadsheet

Before you begin making any changes, take a moment to determine the location of the generated query. Understanding where it has been created will assist you in locating it within the DataslayerQueries sheet in the next step if you've several queries on your document.

2. Open the DataslayerQueries sheet

Dataslayer stores query configurations in a dedicated sheet called DataslayerQueries

If you're unsure where to find it, refer to our guide for quick access.

2

3. Remove the Query ID and Range address

At this point, you must close the extension, and we will provide instructions on when to reopen it.

Once inside the DataslayerQueries sheet:

  • Identify the row that contains your query.

  • In the designated column, remove both the Query ID and the Range Address where it was initially created.

When making adjustments on this sheet, please be careful.

Altering any cells outside of those specified in this guide may disrupt the functionality of your queries. If you encounter any issues with the queries not running smoothly, we recommend checking this article for assistance.

4. Delete the previously created table

Return to the sheet where your query was displayed. Locate the table that was generated by the query and remove it by selecting the table and pressing the "Delete" key or the Backspace key on your keyboard.

Deleting the table does not remove your query's configuration—it remains securely stored in the DataslayerQueries sheet.

5. Enter the new range address

Return to the DataslayerQueries sheet and input the new range address where you want the query to appear.

6

Considerations when selecting the range address:

  • If you enter the range address as A1:A1, the tool will automatically determine the appropriate ending cell based on the data size. This ensures that the table starts at A1 and expands dynamically as needed.
  • You can also specify a custom range if you want the query to appear elsewhere.
    • Example: If you want the query to appear in C5:E5, simply enter C5:E5 as the range address, and the data will be placed accordingly.
  • The ending cell of the table is always updated automatically based on the amount of data retrieved.
    • Example: If your query initially returns only three columns (A1:C1), but you've selected a larger range (A1:F1), the tool will adjust the range dynamically upon refresh. If the query still only returns three columns, the range will update to reflect A1:C1 instead of A1:F1.

6. Refresh the query in the Dataslayer extension

While opening the Dataslayer extension, you’ll notice some details have been automatically updated. Nevertheless, to ensure the changes take effect, click the Refresh button.

7

7. Verify the query placement

Once the refresh is complete, go back to your spreadsheet. The query should now be positioned correctly within the new range.

8

Done! You've successfully modified the query range address.
