How to avoid data discrepancies between Shopify and Dataslayer

In this article, we’ll explain how to check your Shopify data correctly to avoid confusion when comparing it with Dataslayer results.

Dataslayer pulls your Shopify data directly from the official Shopify API, without making any changes. This means the numbers you see in Dataslayer reflect exactly what the API provides.

However, if you compare those numbers with what you see in the Shopify admin console, you might notice some differences. This happens because Shopify shows different data depending on the section you are looking at.

Below, we’ll show you where to look in Shopify so that your data matches what Dataslayer displays.

How to see the same data in the Shopify console and Dataslayer

Dataslayer reports the exact data provided by the Shopify API. If you notice discrepancies, the first step is to make sure you are checking the correct section in Shopify.

To do this, go to the Analytics > Reports section in your Shopify admin, and open a report like “Sales over time”, as shown in the example below:

1-Jul-10-2025-08-18-06-7337-AM

In these reports, you will find options on the right-hand side to add metrics, dimensions, and filters. You can also adjust the date range at the top of the report to match the period you are reviewing in Dataslayer:

2-Jul-10-2025-08-19-00-1249-AM

It is important to note that Shopify’s admin console includes different sections that may show data in different ways (Orders section ≠ Analytics section).

To match the data shown in Dataslayer, you should always compare it with the information in the Analytics > Reports section of Shopify.

Other sections, like “Orders” may display data differently and include or exclude elements such as taxes, discounts, or shipping costs.
